I was born in Eastern Europe during the height of the Stalinist regime's reign of terror. Thus, I know what it is like to live under a repressive, dictatorial regime. The fear and terror -- as dissident friends and family members were tortured, imprisoned and some were executed -- is indelibly etched in my memory. That is the reason I have always been an ardent advocate of freedom, social justice, civil liberties, human rights and a voice of peace. The way I see it, war is morally wrong, regardless of who wages it, for whatever reason. No piece of land or commodity is worth the sacrifice of one human life. We are all members of the same race - the "human race" - and must learn to coexist peacefully. Our planet cannot sustain us much longer if we do not stop our wars, nukes, polluting, deforestation, and the wasteful, gluttonous consumption and depletion of our natural resources.

    CIA Detention Centers in Europe/Meeting with European Parliament Member Cem Oezdemier and Discussion about Interim Report on European Complicity

    This is an interesting update from Steven Clemons, Publisher of the Washington Note, about the meeting he had hosted today with a European Parliament member. It also includes a link to an important European Parliament report recently made available.

    This email is for people both in Washington and outside Washington and invites you (last moment) to an event — but also includes a link to an important European Parliament report recently made available.

    Most of you will not be able to attend the meeting I am hosting today with European Parliament Member and former German Bundestag Member CEM OEZDEMIR.

    However, if you are able, we are meeting at 1 pm at the New America Foundation offices at 1630 Connecticut Avenue, NW, 7th Floor. The meeting will conclude by 2:15 pm.

    But there has been so much interest in Oezdemir’s talk regarding the release of an Interim Report by the European Parliament on potential European nation complicity and collaboration with the CIA in its detention and rendition programs, that I thought (1) I would invite any of you nearby who would like to stop in; (2) let those outside of Washington know that there will be a digital link to Cem Oezdemir’s presentation on the New America Foundation website tomorrow; (3) send a link to the English Translation of this Interim Report, and (4) a link to my website that provides more information on the subject.
