Fair Trade Mondays at BuzzFlash

The good people at BuzzFlash not only bring you unreported or under-reported news, book/dvd reviews, commentary and analysis. A month or so ago, they started having "Fair Trade Mondays". Each Monday, an item is featured, such as dried fruit, coffee, soap, nuts. This week's feature is Fair Trade chocolate covered Brazil nuts from Peru. All items directly benefit the growers, farmers, producers or in this case, the "gatherers". All products are organically grown and high in quality. This is a wonderfully novel idea well worth your support.

The Fair Trade organization improving the lives of the Peruvian brazil nut harvesters is called "Candela Peru."

"Candela Peru works with 273 castaneros (Brazil nut gatherers) and their families who live along the Madre de Dios river in eastern Peru. Brazil nut pods fall naturally from trees in the rainforest which are over 50 meters high. The castaneros then crack open the pods with machetes and extract the nuts, which are used for food or oil.

"The castaneros livelihood depends on the sound and responsible management of forest resources and they are working closely with the staff of Candela to improve the quality of their organic product. Candela (Spanish for candle) Peru is an alternative trading organization, founded in 1989, which offers training to the nut gatherers in the areas of administration, sustainable resource management, and export procedures."

BuzzFlash obtains these nuts from SERV International, "a founding member of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT) in 1989.
