The Cuban Five political prisoners, who have already served seven and a half years in U.S. prisons, due to their unjust convictions and sentences, had their appeals heard in oral arguments before an "en banc" hearing, in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, on February 14. Weinglass will address the legal issues in the appellate case.
The year 2006 will be crucial in the legal and political battle to win freedom for these five men. Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González are anti-terrorists activists who were stopping terrorists from carrying out attacks on the island of Cuba.

On April 20 in El Paso, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials will interview Luis Posada Carriles to consider his petition for citizenship. He is detained in El Paso by Immigration for illegally entering the United States in March 2005. Posada has a long and bloody history of terrorism. As a CIA agent for over 40 years, he was primarily responsible for the mid-air bombing of a Cuban airliner on October 6, 1976, in which 73 people died. Posada directed a series of Cuban hotel bombings, which resulted in the murder of a young Italian tourist in 1997. Posada has committed many other terrorist attacks on innocent people.
Despite his murderous history, the U.S. government refuses to honor the request by Venezuela for Posada's extradition, to be tried for the Cubana airliner bombing. (Posada engineered the plane bombing in Venezuela.)
The ANSWER Coalition has carried out a national campaign since Posada entered the U.S. in 2005, to demand that Washington stop harboring this terrorist, and extradite him to Venezuela for trial. The families of the 73 Cubana plane bombing victims have waited 30 years for justice. Yet, while protecting Posada, the U.S. government is unjustly holding the Cuban Five anti-terrorists in U.S. prisons. (Visit www.freethefive.org about their struggle.)
