Canada and the Problem with Losing Perspective

"The GTA's alleged Islamist terror plot marks a turning point for this country. Even though nothing happened, it creates the fear that, maybe, something could happen. It changes the way we see things", writes Thomas Walkom in a compelling article in today's Toronto Star.

Walkom writes that this is not the first time Canada has dealt with terror: he mentions the Air India bombing and the FLQ 'crisis' and Canada's War Measures Act. As for our paranoia and fear, well that has happened before too, during the post-war spy trials which "set Canada's Cold War mood." So the big scare was on. Except in 1946, the bogeymen were Reds, not Muslims.
