URGENT CHANGE: HART HOUSE DEBATE ON NATIVE SELF-GOVERNMENT
The Hart House Debates Committee at the University of Toronto regrets to announce that the Hon. Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development has cancelled his appearance at our debate on Native self-government this Friday. In his place, we are pleased to welcome Prof. Darlene Johnston, of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law. Prof. Johnston is a member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation. Her advocacy work for her community contributed to the judicial recognition of her people's treaty right to the commercial fishery and to the recovery and protection of burial grounds and other culturally-significant sites within their traditional territory. She also teaches aboriginal law and her research focuses on the relationship between totemic identity, territoriality and governance.
The debate will explore questions of autonomy and the character of the rights granted to aboriginal governments. It will also deal with various issues surrounding aboriginal self-government including its constitutional status, its effectiveness, and its impact on wider society. This debate is presented in association with the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy, which seeks to advance learning and disseminate knowledge about parliamentary democracy.
Since 1924 Hart House Formal Debates have been the premier forum of debate and discussion at the University of Toronto. The Debates are led off by some of the best student debaters at the university and also provide opportunity for all in attendance to express their views. The debates conclude with a prominent guest speaker, often newsmakers, journalists, or academics, providing their perspective on the resolution. The debates are often lively, always free, and open to the general public.
