U.S. Rejects UN Call to Release Guantanamo Detainees
(Why am I not surprised by this?) The U.S. government has rejected a United Nations report calling for the release or trial of the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba."These are dangerous terrorists that we're talking about that are there," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Thursday.

The Bush administration holds itself above ALL international laws, and completely disregards the UN - and every other organization. Bush's America exists only for itself, unto itself, the rest of the world is insignificant.
Meantime, the U.S. ambassador to the UN wrote in his report that the investigation did not take into account evidence they [U.S.] provided, and that the UN experts rejected the invitation to visit Gitmo. The UN investigators said they refused the invitation because U.S. authorities would not let them interview prisoners. So their visit have been futile anyway. (What's the point, if you can't talk to the prisoners?)
The European parliament is expected to support a call for the closure of Guantanamo and for all prisoners to be treated "in full accordance with international humanitarian law". This resolution is backed by all major political groups in the European legislature, but it is non-binding, so nothing will come of it, except perhaps some increased pressure on Washington, and as we have seen, Washington does not care about pressure or the opinions of other countries. The U.S. is the world's biggest bully and holds itself above all international laws. And the UN, EU, and every other organization has been rendered ineffectual, impotent.
