I was born in Eastern Europe during the height of the Stalinist regime's reign of terror. Thus, I know what it is like to live under a repressive, dictatorial regime. The fear and terror -- as dissident friends and family members were tortured, imprisoned and some were executed -- is indelibly etched in my memory. That is the reason I have always been an ardent advocate of freedom, social justice, civil liberties, human rights and a voice of peace. The way I see it, war is morally wrong, regardless of who wages it, for whatever reason. No piece of land or commodity is worth the sacrifice of one human life. We are all members of the same race - the "human race" - and must learn to coexist peacefully. Our planet cannot sustain us much longer if we do not stop our wars, nukes, polluting, deforestation, and the wasteful, gluttonous consumption and depletion of our natural resources.

40 MPG Weekly Update: $3.07 Per Gallon Record To Fall?

Here is the latest weekly update from 40 MPG.org about escalating gasoline prices; Bush and global warming; Detroit auto-makers lagging their heels in significantly boosting fuel-efficiency in their vehicles even though they already know how to do this (inefficient US cars account for half the world's vehicle-related greenhouse gases!); increasing numbers of consumers pushing for plug-in hybrids; and much more... All interesting information from this hard-working site.

With summer travel upon us, this information is of interest and concern to both Americans and Canadians.

$3.07 PER GALLON RECORD TO FALL?

July 12, 2006: So much for those who said gas prices couldn't possibly remain at such high levels! On Tuesday, average pump prices climbed to the dreaded $3.00 per gallon mark -- a record level for 2006, up 11 cents in the last two weeks alone and reflecting a half-dollar price jump from one year ago! Is the post-Katrina, all-time gas price record of $3.07 per gallon now in danger of falling? Federal experts say there is no prospect of any easing in gas prices this summer ... Other U.S. and international companies may be getting serious about energy conservation and climate change, but Detroit is still dragging its heels. Not only are the vast majority of the "least green machines" made right here in the US of A, but it turns out that Detroit already knows how to significantly boost fuel efficiency -- it just isn't using the technology. Big surprise: The same genuises who missed the boat on hybrids are now claiming U.S. car buyers don't really want the tech that will result in higher fuel efficiency. (Think about that blame-the-victim rationalization the next time you get mugged at the gas pump!) ... So, what does needlessly low fuel efficiency in the U.S. mean in hard terms? Inefficient U.S. cars account for half of the world's vehicle-related greenhouse gases ... A bright light on the horizon? Consumers may start pushing for wide introduction of PHEVs: plug-in hybrid vehicles ... On a lighter note, check out this People magazine interview with President Bush in which he claims to be "solving" (!) global warming ...
