Canada: Solidarity with striking diamond workers

Workers of Canada's first diamond mine, BHP Ekati, are on strike. BHP Billiton, a multinational corporation with a less than stellar reputation for achieving labour relations peace owns and operates the mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Many of the 375 employees are from surrounding Aboriginal communities. These workers were unable to negotiate a fair and reasonable first collective agreement. BHP Billiton had international profits of some $7.5 billion last year, but expected these workers to accept a 1% pay increase, no increase in vacation entitlements, no seniority rights and no job security.
