Afghan Clerics Want Convert Repatriated

After the purported overthrow of the Taliban several years ago, has any real progress been made in Afghanistan? Despite the Bush administration's glowing reports and the same rhetoric played like a broken record, the situation seems to be increasingly deteriorating. One example is the case of Abdul Rahman, the Afghani who converted to Christianity. Caving in to Western pressure, the Afghan government "spirited" Rahman out of the country to Italy. Now the clerics want him back to face trial, failing that, they call for the government to resign. If this also fails, they call for violence nation-wide.

I keep questioning our involvement in that country. How long do we envision it will take until we see the 'improvements' our troops are helping to make there? When will we say 'enough' and bring the troops back? I know my view is not the popular one amongst my fellow bloggers. But I sincerely fail to see what real difference our presence is making. I am all for helping the Afghanis rebuild their country and achieve some semblance of a 'democratic-type' government, but perhaps that is not what the majority of the people want, regardless of the opinions to the contrary of a few Afghani bloggers and expatriates.

Afghan clerics and their followers have threatened violence against the government over the release of a Christian convert, saying he has to be brought back from Italy and put on trial. About 1,000 people gathered in a mosque in the northeastern town of Kunduz on Sunday and demanded that Abdul Rahman, 40, be brought back from Italy and sentenced to death.

The more I researched about Afghanistan, the more I felt confirmed in my view that we have no place there!
